Simba Mate - Inexhaustible Energy to Serve

WELCOME

Forty years ago today, this beautiful school opened with just four staff members, led by Mr. Andy Cowan. As one of the founding pupils, it gives me great pleasure to return to Hillcrest as its new Principal. Over the years, the prep school and college have grown into an incredible campus, and I am immensely proud of the work that has gone into creating this enriching learning environment for our current pupils.

Walking around both schools and meeting pupils, I sense their happiness in learning here. Reflecting on my time here, I remember being part of a caring and compassionate community. My experiences at Hillcrest have helped me build resilience, problem-solving skills, and stimulate my creativity. Fellow Old Crestonians have shared similar reflections, and also have long-lasting, happy memories of being part of Hillcrest Schools.

Every school day matters to us as it offers anopportunity to develop a love of learning, not only academically but also in terms of wellbeing, abilities, and talents. Hillcrest remains dedicated to providing an enriching and nurturing environment. We look forward to working with your child individually, and within communal experiences, to build character, create connections and strengthen camaraderie.

I warmly welcome you and your children to our school. We hope you and your family join the Hillcrest community with excitement and anticipation. It is my wish that our current community members remember their school days at Hillcrest as fondly as I do.

THE SCHOOL MOTTO

Simba Mate’ is a Shona expression which has been given a number of possible translations. The first Hillcrest College Shona teacher, Mr. Gilbert Rondozai, gave it a more detailed translation – ‘the strength that we have is inexhaustible, one can give freely of one’s talents and strength to society and other people without loss to yourself’. Simply put, the motto translates to ‘energy to serve which is inexhaustible’.
